A custom reclaimed wood children’s bed makes it possible to use a child’s bedroom far more efficiently than a standard bed. Mattress size, bed height, access, guard rails, storage and overall shape can be adapted to the room, the child’s age and the way the space is used every day.

At The Dutchwoodcraft Company, our reclaimed wood children’s beds are made in our own workshop in the Netherlands. We are therefore not restricted to one fixed size or standard layout. Narrow rooms, sloping ceilings, alcoves, radiators, doors and high ceilings can all be taken into account during the design.

For indoor use, the timber is carefully planed and dried back to approximately 12% moisture content. This makes it considerably more stable while retaining the visible grain, knots and natural colour variations that give every reclaimed wood children’s bed its individual character.

A simple reclaimed wood children’s bed can be kept low and understated or fitted with a higher bed surround, headboard, footboard, bedside niche or storage beneath the mattress. With made-to-measure furniture, the proportions can be tailored precisely to the mattress and available floor space.

A reclaimed wood children’s bed with storage is ideal when toys, bedding, clothes or books need a permanent place. Wide drawers, storage boxes, open compartments or cupboard sections can be integrated beneath or around the bed.

A custom reclaimed wood bunk bed uses the height of the bedroom efficiently and is a practical solution when two children share a room. The beds can be positioned directly above one another or arranged in an offset layout where the room allows it. With a reclaimed wood bunk bed with storage, the stairs can become part of the storage system. Wider steps can contain drawers, cupboards or open compartments, turning otherwise unused space into practical everyday storage.

A custom reclaimed wood loft bed is particularly useful in a smaller children’s bedroom. Raising the sleeping area creates space underneath for play, storage, a seating area, wardrobe or desk, allowing several functions to share the same floor area.

Under a reclaimed wood loft bed with storage, we can integrate open compartments, drawers, shelves and closed cupboards. In a high room, the available height can be divided carefully between the sleeping area and the space below.

A reclaimed wood loft bed with desk combines sleeping and studying in one piece of furniture. The desk can sit beneath the loft bed, be integrated at the side or connect to a complete cupboard and storage wall. Desk height, width, legroom, drawers and shelving can all be tailored to the room.

A reclaimed wood children’s bed with desk and storage can be extended with a wardrobe, book compartments, drawers or open shelving. This creates one coherent piece of furniture instead of separate bed, desk and storage units competing for floor space.

A reclaimed wood playhouse bed combines sleep and play in a recognisable house-shaped design. The roofline and open sides can remain calm and timeless or become a stronger feature within the children’s bedroom.

A reclaimed wood playhouse bed with storage can also include drawers beneath the bed, a book niche, bedside shelf or additional side storage, keeping the playful design practical.

A custom reclaimed wood built-in bed creates a cosy, enclosed sleeping place and can form part of a complete fitted wall. Wardrobes, open niches, bookshelves, drawers and storage can be designed around the bed so that the full wall is used effectively.

With a reclaimed wood built-in bed, the area beneath the mattress can hold large drawers or cupboard sections. If the sleeping area is raised, steps or stairs can also be designed with additional storage.

Made-to-measure design is especially useful in bedrooms with sloping ceilings or difficult corners. Instead of adapting the room to a standard bed, we design the custom reclaimed wood children’s bed around the available dimensions.

Mattress size is an important starting point for every made-to-measure children’s bed. Standard sizes can be accommodated, but different lengths or widths can also be considered. The overall external dimensions are then determined by the mattress, construction, bed surround and required walking space.

For a reclaimed wood bunk bed, reclaimed wood loft bed and other raised beds, access and mattress height require extra attention. Ladder or stair position, clear access and the height of the bed surround need to work logically together with the chosen mattress.

The finish has a major influence on the final appearance of a custom reclaimed wood children’s bed. A natural finish keeps the timber light and calm, while white wash, grey wash or a darker finish creates a very different atmosphere.

On request, we also make custom oak children’s beds. Oak has a calmer, more refined grain and works particularly well in modern or minimalist bedrooms. Dimensions, storage and layout remain fully customisable.

A children’s bed can be coordinated with a matching desk, wardrobe, wall shelves or other made-to-measure furniture. Repeating the same timber colour, proportions and details creates a cohesive children’s bedroom.

For a built-in bed, reading corner or integrated seating area, made-to-measure cushions can also be produced in our own sewing atelier. Size, fabric and colour can be coordinated with the furniture and the rest of the room.

With a reclaimed wood children’s bed with slatted base, we consider not only the internal bed dimensions but also the height of the selected base. The roll-up slatted base is 3 cm high, Actiflex 5 cm and Sensaflex 30 6 cm. This contributes to the final mattress height.

For a reclaimed wood loft bed or bunk bed with mattress, the complete build-up is particularly important. Bed construction, slatted base and mattress together determine how much effective guard-rail height remains above the mattress.

Several bed bases are available. The roll-up slatted base is 3 cm high and suitable up to 100 kg, Actiflex is 5 cm high and suitable up to 75 kg, and Sensaflex 30 is 6 cm high and suitable up to 120 kg.

We also offer the Nero HR40 cold foam mattress, suitable up to 100 kg and supplied with a washable cover. For a made-to-measure children’s bed, mattress dimensions and the selected base are coordinated with the internal bed size and overall construction.
